Digitally Connecting Seniors
Ms Aditi Das Patnaik, 39, is one of the many Infocomm Media Development Authority’s (IMDA) SG:D Friends from IBM. Ms Aditi volunteered in the Silver IT Fest Roadshow in June 2017, together with her colleagues to help out at the Digital Clinic for Seniors. Seniors who face problems on their mobile devices could visit the clinic where volunteers were on hand to assist them.
About her experience at the Digital Clinic, she said, “I think the seniors are quite savvy. Some of the problems they came to me with were quite advanced and I had to do some research to solve it. Technology is supposed to make our lives easy but yet for seniors, technology often becomes a point of frustration. I encourage seniors to reach out and get help if they are struggling with something. Most people here in Singapore, even strangers, are very willing to help.”
Given the good experience, IBM rallied businesses in Changi Business Park (CBP) vicinity to come together in a joint community project – CBP Gives. Companies such as Citibank, Cognizant, Credit Suisse, DBS, IBM, Standard Chartered, UPS and Yusen Logistics came together to support close to 30 Digital Clinics in the eastern part of Singapore. To date, we have organized over 90 digital clinics that have collectively reached about 4,000 seniors.
As of Feb 2021, the SG:D Friends programme has been folded into the Digital for Life movement launched by IMDA.
