The Mao Kun Map (茅坤图), otherwise known as the Zheng He Navigational Chart (郑和航海图) is derived from information gathered during Admiral Zheng He’s voyages around the world, which in turn was based on navigational tradition dating back to Wang Dayuan’s (汪大渊) Daoyi Zhilue (岛夷志略) from the 14th century. Singapore was labelled as Dan Ma Xi (淡马锡), which is believed to be a sinicised attempt on “Temasek”, Singapore’s name as recognised by the Javanese Majapahit Empire. Easily identified landforms in the vicinity of Singapore such as Longyamen (龙牙门, Dragon Teeth gate) and Banzu (班卒) were also identified in the map.
