This gold coin has the words ‘Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah’ inscribed on it. It was discovered during the 2015 excavation at Empress Place, Singapore.

Considering that this coin is dated to the 17th century, it might have been issued by Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah III of Johor who reigned between 1623 to 1677.

The Johor Sultanate was formed following the fall of Melaka in 1511, when the royal family shifted to a new capital in Batu Sawar, Johor. Singapore at the time was part of the Sultanate, and acted as a trading port and shahbandariah, which can explain for the coinage being found on the site.
