Majulah Belanja

Majulah Belanja – which means “Onward, to treat” – is a volunteer-run initiative that came about to create opportunities for locals and low-wage migrant workers to get to know each other over food. Using food as a medium, the aim is to break down barriers and inspire positive attitudes to migrant worker groups.

Attended by more than 200 participants, the great cook-off, held in a workers dormitory in Woodlands, is a joint effort by a group of millennials from social enterprise Geylang Adventures and D Wall dormitory. The organisers brought on board various partners who donated supplies such as fortified rice, seafood and sauces.

“How we treat the low-wage migrant workers will in turn affect how our children perceive and treat other people they are not familiar with,” said Cai Yinzhou, founder of Geylang Adventures. “We have witnessed kindness in various forms. One does not need to be wealthy to be generous or kind.”

The next Majulah Belanja is scheduled sometime in August 2017. Meanwhile, if you’re keen to volunteer, participate or bring the movement to more migrant workers, get in touch with Geylang Adventures
